Time
Time is a key variable in teaching. It is, however, more often com- mented on than properly discussed. To be effective, we need to consider at least three time scales, namely:
1. Time across the year.
2. Time within the week.
3. Time within the lesson.
In school, time clearly does not proceed in undifferentiated fashion throughout the year. Different times of year work in different ways. Various events shape the rhythm of the academic year ΓÇô exams, vacations, activity days, school visits, report- writing, work experience projects, public events such as public holidays and festivals and even changes in weather and light. Many of these are known about in advance and need, therefore, to be planned around. ItΓÇÖs no good complaining, for example, about the sports day ΓÇÿinterruptingΓÇÖ oneΓÇÖs schemes of work when in fact the day was listed on the calendar at the start of the year: being interrupted by a known event is simply a sign of poor planning.
