Kasus WOrldCom.
WorldCom pada awalnya merupakan perusahaan penyedia layanan telvon jarak jauh. Selama tahun 90an perusahaan ini melakukan beberapa akuisisi terhadap perusahaaan telekumunikasi lain yang kemudian meningkatkan pendapatannya dari $152 juta pada tahun 1990 menjadi $392 milyar pada 2001, yang pada akhirnya menempatkan WorldCom pada posisi ke 42 dari 500 perusahaan lainnya menurut versi majalah Fortune. Pada tahun 1990 terjadi masalah Fundamental ekonomi pada WorldCom yaitu terlalu besarnya kapasitas telekomunikasi. Masalah ini terjadi karena pada tahun 1998 Amerika mengalami resesi ekonomi sehingga pemerintah terhadap Infrastruktur Internet berkurang drastis. Hal ini berimbas pada pendapatan WorldCom yang menurun drastis sehingga pendapatan ini juga dari yang diharapkan. Nilai pasar saham perusahaan WorldCom turun dari 150 milyar dollar (januari 2000) menjadi hanya sekitar $150 juta (1 juli 2002). Keadaan ini membuat pihak manajemen berusaha melakukan praktek-praktek akuntansi untuk menghindari berita buruk tersebut.

There has never been a demand for reliable accountants and auditors with high integrity to be very high. The Public Accounting Firm (KAP) and the auditor should be able to be independent and not lose their objectivity in auditing the financial statements and evaluating the accounting methods of the company they are auditing. Also highly respects the independence, professionalism, and does not violate the professional code of ethics and the denial of responsibility for the profession and society. So that the phenomenon of mega scandals like WorldCom is not repeated again. And these events have given warning bells to accountants, it is hoped that this profession will be stronger and more valued than ever.
