Subjects and verbs must agree in number. In addition to the explanations on this page, also see the post on SubjectΓÇöVerb Agreement.

If the subject is singular, the verb must be singular too.

Example: She writes every day.

Exception: When using the singular "they," use plural verb forms.

Example: The participant expressed satisfaction with their job. They are currently in a managerial role at the organization.

If the subject is plural, the verb must also be plural.

Example: They write every day.

Sometimes, however, it seems a bit more complicated than this.

When the subject of the sentence is composed of two or more nouns or pronouns connected by and, use a plural verb.

Example: The doctoral student and the committee members write every day.

Example: The percentage of employees who called in sick and the number of employees who left their jobs within 2 years are reflective of the level of job satisfaction.

When there is one subject and more than one verb, the verbs throughout the sentence must agree with the subject.

Example: Interviews are one way to collect data and allow researchers to gain an in-depth understanding of participants.

Example: An assumption is something that is generally accepted as true and is an important consideration when conducting a doctoral study.

When a phrase comes between the subject and the verb, remember that the verb still agrees with the subject, not the noun or pronoun in the phrase following the subject of the sentence.

Example: The student, as well as the committee members, is excited.

Example: The student with all the masterΓÇÖs degrees is very motivated.

Example: Strategies that the teacher uses to encourage classroom participation include using small groups and clarifying expectations.

Example: The focus of the interviews was nine purposively selected participants.

When two or more singular nouns or pronouns are connected by "or" or "nor," use a singular verb.

Example: The chairperson or the CEO approves the proposal before proceeding.

When a compound subject contains both a singular and a plural noun or pronoun joined by "or" or "nor," the verb should agree with the part of the subject that is closest to the verb. This is also called the rule of proximity.

Example: The student or the committee members write every day.

Example: The committee members or the student writes every day.

The words and phrases "each," "each one," "either," "neither," "everyone," "everybody," "anyone," "anybody," "nobody," "somebody," "someone," and "no one" are singular and require a singular verb.

Example: Each of the participants was willing to be recorded.

Example: Neither alternative hypothesis was accepted.

Example: I will offer a $5 gift card to everybody who participates in the study.

Example: No one was available to meet with me at the preferred times.

Noncount nouns take a singular verb.

Example: Education is the key to success.

Example: Diabetes affects many people around the world.

Example: The information obtained from the business owners was relevant to include in the study.

Example: The research I found on the topic was limited.

Some countable nouns in English such as earnings, goods, odds, surroundings, proceeds, contents, and valuables only have a plural form and take a plural verb.

Example: The earnings for this quarter exceed expectations.

Example: The proceeds from the sale go to support the homeless population in the city.

Example: Locally produced goods have the advantage of shorter supply chains.

In sentences beginning with "there is" or "there are," the subject follows the verb. Since "there" is not the subject, the verb agrees with what follows the verb.

Example: There is little administrative support.

Example: There are many factors affecting teacher retention.

Collective nouns are words that imply more than one person but are considered singular and take a singular verb. Some examples are "group," "team," "committee," "family," and "class."

Example: The group meets every week.

Example: The committee agrees on the quality of the writing.

However, the plural verb is used if the focus is on the individuals in the group. This is much less common.

Example: The committee participate in various volunteer activities in their private lives.

What Is Subject-Verb Agreement?

In English, subject-verb agreement is important. What this means is that the characteristics of the subject should be reflected in the verb. For example, if a subject is singular, the verb form must also be singular.

Plural and Singular Subject

In the present tense, nouns and verbs agree in opposite ways. When the subject is plural usually and “S” to show that it’s plural.

Example subjects :

  • Car ΓåÆ Cars.

    • ΓÇ£The cars look expensiveΓÇ¥ (Plural).

    • ΓÇ£The car looks expensiveΓÇ¥ (Singular).

  • Baby ΓåÆ Babies.

I, you → Plural subjects.

He, she, it → Singular subjects.

Auxiliary Verb

  • Do/does ΓåÆ In the present simple.

  • Am/is/are/was/were ΓåÆ In the continuous tenses.

  • Have/has ΓåÆ In the perfect tenses.

To think about the subject-verb agreement because the auxiliary verb, because the agreeing verb, the verb that agrees with the subject.

Example :

  • We are going to the beach.

  • He is going to the beach.

Modal Verb

  • May

  • Could

  • Will

  • Must

  • Should

They help the main verb in the sentence but the subject-verb agreement rules are different with modal auxiliary verb. The verb following a modal verb is never in the ΓÇ£SΓÇ¥ form. ItΓÇÖs always in the infinitive form.

the subject and the verb in the English sentence must match

if the subject is plural, then the verb form used is also plural

then if the subject is singular, then the form of the verb used must also be singular.

There are 2 areas where both the subject and the verb can go wrong,

the first on writing, and the second on speaking skills

when the verb is plural, it must be added with an 's' to indicate that the verb is plural. otherwise the verb is singular, there is no added 's'

example:

car becomes cars

babies become babies

but if you use a plural subject, there's no need to add an 's' to the verb.

"the cars look expensive" (the noun shows the plural)

"the car looms expensive" (noun denotes singular)

when the noun is singular, the verb needs to be added with an 's'

if there is an additional verb in the sentence (auxiliary verb), such as do / does in the simple present, am / is / are / was / were in the contunious tense, have / has in the perfect tense. then there must be a match between the subject and the verb.

example:

we are going to the beach

he is going to the beach

there are also modal verbs such as, may, could, will, must, should. and they are also adjunct verbs, but have different subject and verb rules than before. verbs followed by a modal verb, not using the extra 's'

Subject – verb agreement adalah peraturan umum grammar yang membuat subject dan verb kalimat harus saling menyesuaikan. Penyesuaian ini tidak terbatas pada penyesuaian noun/pronoun dan verb aja, tapi juga number/quantifiers dan verb.

EXAMPLE:
~:Augi Runs to the bus station.
~:My Sister and I are best friends, we always played when we were younger.
~:That Boy chooses to play alone, while the other Boy choose play together.

kata-kata Bold tersebut adalah inti dari Subject-Verb Agreement. Pada contoh pertama subjeknya adalah Augi, karena third person pronoun, maka verb yg mengikuti harus berakhiran "-s", dari "run" menjadi "runs".

Agreement means conformity.  So, the subject verb agreement is the conformity between the subject and the verb (verb).  Because verbs in English are not like Indonesian which are almost always the same shape regardless of the subject, a verb must be adapted to the subject of the sentence.

 Example:

The kidplays kite.

Kid: anak kecil (singular)

Plays: bermain (singular verb)

The kidsplay kite.

Kids: anak-anak (plural)

Play: bermain (plural verb)

pengertian subject verb agreement Agreement berarti kesesuaian. Kata lain dari agreement adalah concord. Sedangkan Subject Verb Agreement adalah kesesuaian antara subjek dengan kata kerja dalam sebuah kalimat.

Sebuah kata kerja harus sesuai dengan subyeknya contohnya

The cat eats fish. The cats eat fish.
cat = singular subject
eats = singular verb
cats = plural subject
eat = plural verb

aturan subject verb agreement

1. Singular ΓÇô Plural

» Jika subject singular, maka gunakan verb singular.

  • Novita goes/go┬áto school.
  • The cat┬áeat/eats┬áfish.
  • She┬áread/reads┬áa book.

» Jika subject plural, maka gunakan verb plural.

  • The students┬ágoes/go┬áto school.
  • The cats eat/eats┬áfish.
  • They read/reads┬ábook.

Jangan lupa dengan singular dan plural nouns (women, children, people). Baca Juga: Penjelasan Lengkap Singular dan Plural Nouns

2. Prepositional phrases

» Jika terdapat prepositional phrase, maka subject adalah sebelum preposition.

  • Salah:┬áThe door┬á(at the houses)┬áare┬ábroken.
  • Benar:┬áThe door┬á(at the houses)┬áis┬ábroken.

Penjelasan: ‘At the houses’ adalah prepositional phrase. Maka subject dalam kalimat diatas adalah the door, dan verb yang digunakan adalah is.

» Jika terdapat lebih dari satu prepositional phrases, maka subject adalah sebelum preposition pertama.

  • Salah:┬áThe meeting┬á(of the teachers) (in the school)┬ábegin┬áat 10 a.m.
  • Benar:┬áThe meeting┬á(of the teachers) (in the school)┬ábegins┬áat 10 a.m.

Penjelasan: ‘Of the teachers, in the school” adalah prepositional phrases. Maka subject dalam kalimat diatas adalah the meeting, dan verb yang digunakan adalah begins.

3. Conjunction ΓÇÿandΓÇÖ

┬╗ Ketika dua subjek dihubungkan dengan ΓÇ£andΓÇ¥, maka gunakan verb plural.

  • The┬ácars┬áand┬ámotorcycles┬ápark┬áin front of the building.
  • Rina┬áand┬áRini┬áare┬áplaying┬águitar together.

4. Expressions of Quantity

» Apabila terdapat expressions of quantity (all, most, atau some) diikuti oleh preposition ‘of’, maka subject bisa singular atau plural, tergantung pada kata benda setelah preposition.

  • All┬á(of┬áthe flower)┬ágrows┬ábeautifully.
  • All┬á(of┬áthe flowers)┬ágrow┬ábeautifully.
  • Most┬á(of┬áthe student)┬áarrives┬áat school.
  • Most┬á(of┬áthe students)┬áarrive┬áat school.
  • Some┬á(of┬áthe cake)┬áhas been eaten.
  • Some┬á(of┬áthe cakes)┬áhave been eaten.

5. Agreement after Certain Words
